This is also true of body shape. Here, we'll discuss how to draw anime body proportions for babies, children, and adults, males and females.
Take a look at the proportions guide in our illustration. The first image in the reference is of an anime baby. You'll notice that the head is very large and the body is small by comparison.

The head is more rounded than it is with older characters and the overall form of the body is triangular. This base can be used with either male or female characters.
The baby body base can also be used to create chibi characters. Chibi is a Japanese slang term that describes someone who is short. It has also come to signify the particular cuteness of the exaggerated caricatures in which the head and eyes are abnormally large and the body very small.
Next, we have the child anime outline. The proportions of this character are more normalized, but they are slighter than those of adult characters. Anime children characters are also shorter than adults.

To make a male teen character, you can use similar proportions but make the juvenile anatomy drawing a bit taller in comparison to the adults. Female teenage characters are drawn in a manner similar to adult females.
Male characters are often tall and more muscular. The overall shape of the torso is v-shaped, as the shoulders are wide and the body narrows across the abdomen. The shoulders are generally wider than the hips.

For the front view star by drawing a vertical line at least as tall as the entire body. This will help you see if both sides are symmetrical.
If you are drawing both views at once make sure the proportions of one view match up to the proportions in the other. Drawing a horizontal line from a body part in one view to the same body part in the other view will help you do this. You can also draw vertical line as measurements before you start drawing.

A normal body is about as wide as two heads. In anime the head can be a slightly larger but it also depends on the size of the person you are drawing. Big muscular anime characters may have heads that are much smaller in relation to the body than normal characters.
The arms are about as long as the body. With the hands added the arms should be longer than the body. Also keep in mind that the arms are being slightly lifted to the sides in the examples used in this tutorial.

Onto the cleaned up drawing of the body add the details such as the hair and facial features. For a character like the one in this example that is not overly muscular but still fairly fit you can just add some hints of the chest and stomach muscles.
To color and shade our character you can use what is known as “Cel Shading”. Shading with no gradients commonly used in anime.
We will shade the character according to normal lighting conditions (outside during daytime or inside in a well lit room). The main light source will be above and in front of the character. This means the main shadow will be below such as the shadow on the neck cast by head.

For the front view you can also add some small shadows to emphasize the chest and stomach muscles as well as some shadows on the inner side of the legs and below the knees.

Please note that this particular guide is for an average looking high school or adult anime/manga female. The proportions for kids are generally different.
If you are going to be following along it’s recommended that you make the drawing as large as you can to make it easier to add the small details. Unless drawing digitally start in pencil and make very light lines that you can easily erase as you will need to do so in some of the steps.
First draw a straight vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. This will act as a guide to help insure that the body is not skewed to one side. As the drawing is symmetrical the line can also help you see if both halves of it are even in width.
How To Draw Manga
Towards the upper end of this line draw the head. Place it in a way where you have bit of room at the top (if you wish to add the hair) and plenty of room at the bottom for the rest of the body.
To make it easier to structure the head you can first draw a circle for it’s upper part and then add the lower part onto that as shown in the example above. You can erase the lower part of the circle once done.
As this is an anime character be sure to make the lower half of the head quite small and give it a fairly pointy chin.

Going down from the head add the neck and body. However, before you start with this part of the drawing you should read the explanation below.
One way to measure the overall size of the body (with the legs) is in relation to the head. In this particular drawing it will be six and a half heads high. As mentioned at the start of the tutorial these kinds of proportions can work quite well for some of the more common/average female anime characters such as high school students and adults.
You may notice that in the above illustration the feet go slightly past the bottom of the measuring line. This is not a mistake but is done to account for “eye level”.

In this example the feet are well below the level of the viewers eyes so they will appear to go farther down than they actually are. Measuring the height from the tips of the toes to the top of the head would be similar to measuring your height by stretching a measuring tape from the tips of your toes to the center of the top of your head. The measurement wold be off.
To get the correct measurement in this case you would want to estimate where the heels start and go from there (as is done in the example).
Please note that these are just recommendations for getting a generic anime look. The proportions of anime characters can vary depending on many factors including the style of the artist.

For the actual process of drawing the body start with the neck and shoulders. Afterwards outline each of the sides leaving openings between them and the shoulders for the arms. Overall the body should be shaped a bit like an hourglass where it’s narrower near the middle and gets wider as it goes up and down.
For this step add the upper parts of the legs as shown above. You will want make these wider at the top and narrower as they go down with a bit of a curve in the overall shape of each of them. However, you will again first want to read the explanation below before drawing.
